DMG MORI — Brand Expertise

MBR Machinery regularly trades used DMG MORI machines — as buyer, seller and exporter. What that means: we know the model lines, typical weak points, controller differences and what a specific machine is actually worth in the current market.

Why DMG MORI dominates the used market

DMG MORI — created from the merger of Deckel Maho Gildemeister (Germany) and Mori Seiki (Japan) — is the global leader in machine tools. For the used market, that means: many machines, broad buyer base and good spare-parts supply. This makes DMG MORI machines one of the most liquid categories in the used trade — an advantage for buyers and sellers alike.

At the same time, the brand's breadth is a challenge: DMG MORI produces hundreds of models — lathes, mills, horizontal centers, laser systems, gear machines. Not all are equally marketable used, and not all have the same controller history.

Key model lines

NLX series — turn-mill centers

The NLX series is MBR's most-traded DMG MORI line. Typical models: NLX 2500, NLX 3000, NLX 4000. The SY variant (sub-spindle + Y-axis) is significantly more valuable and sought-after than basic variants. Controller: mostly Fanuc 31i or 32i.

Inspection focus: turret accuracy, spindle-hours plausibility, sub-spindle condition (often less well maintained), bar-feeder interface, coolant pumps.

DMU series — 5-axis machining centers

DMU 50, DMU 65, DMU 85, DMU 125 — in ascending size for tool/mould shops up to large workpieces. The DMU series is the most-searched 5-axis center on the German used market. Controller: Heidenhain iTNC 530 / TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl.

Inspection focus: swivel/rotary table axes A and C checked for backlash, spindle tested at 15,000–20,000 RPM, geometry check on the table.

CTX series — CNC lathes

CTX 310 eco, CTX 510 eco, CTX beta 800, CTX gamma 2000 — robust basic lathes in various lengths. Widely used in contract manufacturing and series production. Controller: Fanuc 0i or Siemens 840D.

NHX series — horizontal machining centers

NHX 4000, NHX 5000 — for serial parts in automotive and machine-building. Pallet-change system is the central feature. Controller: Fanuc 30i or 31i.

Inspection focus: pallet positioning, horizontal spindle for radial runout, magazine (40–120 stations).

Mori Seiki (legacy models pre-2013 merger)

SL series (turning), NH series (horizontal), NV series (vertical) — high quality but with Japanese controller tradition (proprietary MSX controllers, partially also Fanuc). Spare-parts supply for older Mori Seiki controllers can be problematic — clarify in advance.

DMG MORI controller overview

Fanuc 31i / 32i (most common)

Robust, globally widespread, good spare-parts supply. Alarm codes are documented and readable. Particularly attractive for buyers in third countries (Turkey, Mexico) — local Fanuc service technicians available.

Siemens 840D sl

Powerful European controller with extensive parameterisation. Preferred in Germany. Older 840D (non-sl) requires attention regarding spare-parts supply.

Heidenhain iTNC 530 / TNC 640

Standard for 5-axis DMU machines. Excellent path control, intuitive for experienced programmers. TNC 640 is the modern successor — software compatibility with 530 partially given.

Typical weak points on used DMG MORI machines

  • Coolant pumps: Wear part, often unmaintained. Symptom: reduced pressure or irregular delivery. Replacement: relatively inexpensive (€200–800) but price-reducing if undisclosed.
  • Tool-magazine grippers: Wear-prone at high cycle frequency. Symptom: delayed change or alarms during change. Repair cost: €500–2,000.
  • A/C axes on DMU (swivel/rotary table): Hydraulic or electric — backlash measurable when poorly maintained. Gear wear visible through inaccurate positioning.
  • Controller batteries: Frequently neglected. Symptom: parameter loss on power failure. Replacement: trivial but a sign of neglected maintenance.
  • Cable carriers and energy chains: Cracking after many years — visible but often unreported.

What MBR offers on DMG MORI machines

  • Acquisition: MBR buys used DMG MORI machines directly — single machines and machine pools. Valuation within 24–48 h, binding offer.
  • Sourcing: Buyers looking for a specific DMG MORI model can place a sourcing mandate. MBR searches the dealer and industry network.
  • Inspection: Full condition check including alarm history, spindle tests and metrology.
  • Export: Worldwide delivery including complete export documentation — particularly experienced for Turkey, MENA and Latin America.
